Road Safety Lookup by Route

Select a state to view its road fatality rate and compare it against the U.S. rate (12.2 per 100K residents in 2023). All data from NHTSA FARS.

About this tool

This tool queries PlainRoadSafety's database of 51 U.S. states and 3,137 counties, built from NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data joined with U.S. Census Bureau population estimates and FHWA Vehicle Miles Traveled data. The U.S. fatality rate is 12.2 per 100K residents (2023).

Selecting a state reloads the page with your choice in the URL (no account, no tracking beyond standard analytics), the comparison itself is a direct database lookup, not a client-side estimate.

Source and method. PlainRoadSafety is rendered directly from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). PlainRoadSafety aggregates published FARS records and does not invent a fatality count the census does not report. This page draws directly on NHTSA FARS census data, no figure is typed in by an editor. See our Editorial & Corrections Policy, the methodology behind these numbers, or Report a correction.
