About this tool
This tool queries PlainRoadSafety's database of 51 U.S. states and 3,137 counties, built from NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data joined with U.S. Census Bureau population estimates and FHWA Vehicle Miles Traveled data. The national 50-state average fatality rate is 12.9 per 100K residents.
Selecting a state reloads the page with your choice in the URL (no account, no tracking beyond standard analytics), the comparison itself is a direct database lookup, not a client-side estimate.
Every figure on PlainRoadSafety is computed directly from NHTSA FARS census data, no number is typed in by an editor.
